The recordings for the new Mesh album have been completed and the band is now 'awaiting the go-ahead from the various parties involved' as they put it. The recordings this time also involved Gareth Jones, famous for his work with the likes of Depeche Mode, Erasure and related.
We took the chance to have a chat with bandmember Richard Silverthorn and asked him how this collaboration with Jones took place: "After working with Peter Schmit on the last album 'Who watches over me', we realised that it was quite good to get someone else involved at the finishing stages i.e mixing plus a few production ideas. (...)
The record company initially suggested Gareth, and obviously we knew of his work with other bands. So we rang him and asked if he would be interested. In January he came to our studio in Bristol and we spent an intense week of mixing. Gareth was really in tune with what we were trying to achieve with this album, which was great as in the past we have had a few bad experiences with producers trying to change our sound."
Gareth Jones himself adds in a reaction to Side-Line that "it was a great pleasure working with the Mesh Men, because they are all very professional and also because I felt I understood where they were coming from, and what they were trying to achieve. The challenge? As always that was in getting it right!"
The band itself learned quite a deal from Jones, Silverthorn says: "To use logic instead of cubase for instance... Umm, probably not to refine things too much. Sometimes in the quest to seek perfection you lose the atmosphere of the original idea. I think Gareth works very quickly and has an ear for what sounds good. He brought out the more organic side of us and gave it a slightly more gritty sound. Electronic music can sound too clinical, which we were trying to avoid."
So how would he describe the evolution of the material? Richard: "Good question. Well, I'd like to think this album is more energetic and dare I say it "rockier" feel to it. A lot of the music in this scene is very formulated of late and we really didn't want to fall into this trap. You know, the four on the floor futurepop thing. We have always tried to write strong songs and then create a musical arrangement that fits the mood around it. On the whole, the album is more positive and upbeat than our others, but still has that slightly sinister undertone to it."
In related news, the band's label Home Records is soon to announce their new label partner as well after they broke company with Sony.
